Passing beneath the Ballard Bridge (bascule/draw)

After leaving Shilshole we passed through the locks and under the bridges into Lake Union and then Portage Bay. More on that in a bit. For now, a bit of video of "threading the needle". First you see a boat passing through the bridge ahead of us, then our mast peeking up toward the opening.

  1. We loved exploring the Ballard area during our week long stay at the Seaview West Boatyard (southend of Shilshole). If you need any gear be sure to stop in at Fisheries Supply at the north end of Lake Union (1900 North Northlake Way). They come highly recommended.

  4. So what time of day did you go through?! Hope you didn't end up making a lot of commuters even more grumpy :)
In the video it looks like the mast comes well above the bridge, but I imagine that is because you are looking up with the camera...how close to the bridge decks were you actually??

  5. The mast is definitely taller than the bridge but not taller than it when it is opened like that, and they close the bridge to boats during rush hour in the morning (9-11) and evening (4-6) to keep us from interrupting the megacommute.
